Methionine
What is Methionine
L-methionine, or simply methionine, is an essential amino acid. A sufficient intake of methionine remains essential to maintain good health.
Methionine is one of twenty protein amino acids needed to build proteins. It has the particularity of being the first amino acid incorporated into all protein chains, hence its capital importance within the body.
Due to its sulfur structure, this amino acid is unique and cannot be synthesized. Methionine has many health benefits, helping to protect the liver and ensure optimal protein synthesis. Often used for athletes or for their antioxidant properties, this amino acid is full of surprises.
Where is Methionine found?
Methionine is found naturally in protein-rich foods like:
- meat
- fish
- egg
- Gruyère
- Sesame seed
After digestion, animal or plant proteins release amino acids including methionine. Present in various food supplements, methionine is often coupled with vitamin B6, zinc, magnesium or other essential amino acids.
Benefits on hair and nails
Methionine is an amino acid with a very strong sulfur structure that can strengthen the skin, especially hair and nails. It is very beneficial in anti-hair loss treatments.
Liver health
Due to its sulfur structure and antioxidant potential, methionine can promote the regeneration of liver (and kidney) cells and prevent the formation of fatty deposits in the liver and gallbladder.
